Your HEAD has to be covered, and so should all your body but your hands and your face (although generally many women dont cover the arms). The common form of headscarf, a khimār or shaylah, is mandatory.
But of course, there are a lot of Muslim women who don't cover their heads at all, like the beautiful first lady of Syria, Asma al-Assad. In Turkey, the Kemalist professional/urban women look down on the women (mostly from the countryside) who cover their heads.

It does pose a lot of problems, I will admit. With the administrative stuff that my friend Reema has to go through for school, it must be a bitch. All the paperwork has to be copied and sent to her Father's mosque, as well as copied for her islamic studies teacher that comes in from a Madrassah somewhere. She has to have special uniform, she cant do drama or PE with the boys present, not allowed to sing. Art is a problem cause she cant take pictures of any animal, including human.

She gets a lot of bullying, so any bullying has to go through both the police, racial equalities units and through her Mosque. The paperwork folder for her is at least 6 times bigger than any other. I'm not saying I condone forcing religious people to break their rules and such, but it does make things difficult.

Wait for it, once they start becoming more common in your neck of the woods a similar proposition will come up shortly after.

Why does this stuff have to go through a Mosque?

Our local Mosque manages the administration of all muslims in the area. Since her father is actually one of the higher religious members of the mosque, he made demands of the school that all paperwork is copied to the Mosque. Sometimes I think the muslim population make things hard for themselves purposely.

Sorry if I come across as being difficult but why, is there some purpose to this or does he just enjoy making extra work for folks?

His belief is that all education of a islamic child must involve the mosque somehow, even if it just to keep watch. That's as good an answer I can give you, If he was ever to know i spent as much time at school as reema, or that i was gay, he would probably lock her in her room.

They actually are quite common, there are about 4 or 5 in our public school, in the comunity there's probably a couple hundred (we only have 100,000 in the city)

Out west they are actually much more common... Correct me if I'm wrong though, I haven't looked at the statistics lately...

Truthfully, the U.S. government really doesn't care.
