Somehow, I don't think saying it slowly will make him understand this side of the argument.

Whut does 'is' mean? Sorry, couldn't help myself.

The point is that it is a game of chance, deserving it or not is simply not part of the equation. I agree it's indeed NICE when someone wins that needs it, but that's all, just nice. There is no moral imperative here other than our societies attitude toward gambling.

That was my point entirely. I get happy when some down-on-their-luck schmo wins; I get pissed when rich people win. Because the poor people deserve it more.

I seriously question the morals of anyone who would prefer the rich person to win, or doesn't understand why the poor person deserves it more.

The point of contention seems to be the use of 'deserve' while we all can agree on the 'need' part.

Fair enough. In my opinion, a person with millions in the bank already doesn't deserve the money as much as someone who's busting ass at a real job, struggling to pay their mortgage. Just my opinion.

But he didn't do anything to "deserve" the money. I agree that it's great to see it go to someone who needs it ( hello?) but "deserve" isn't appropriate. If he got it because of a huge speculation on the type of meat he raised, through his particularly honest and conscientious farming practices, then he'd deserve it.

Again, fair enough. I just think people who do real, hard work "deserve" money more than corporate suit types who sit in a comfy office pushing paperwork, or people who've had it handed to them by fortune of who their parents are.

Just my opinion.

Devil's advocate again: some of those "corporate types" got to where they are by dint of amazing sacrifice and tons of hard work. Ex.: my cousin, who is very wealthy, got that way by taking his father's small local shoe business and turning it - through tireless effort and sacrifice of his own money and lifestyle early on - into an international manufacturing company. Is he pretentious? Yep. Does he deserve every penny he's made? Absolutely.

Sure. Gordon Ramsay started with nothing, and busted ass for years to get what he's got. He deserves it. Richard Branson, same story. But when someone comes out of college that their parents paid for, and cruises right into the cushy exec job with no hard work, it's almost like cheating, IMO. They never worked hard for what they have; it was just handed to them.

My real point is that there are millions of people who do actual hard work every day, for years, and have little or nothing to show for it. They deserve more money on a daily basis, so if a windfall gives them the money they deserved all along, it's a great thing. Someone who just coasted into a comfy six-figure job because of who they are, or by virtue of existing wealth doesn't deserve more free money.

In my opinion.

And there's my point entirely. Deserve is the wrong word. If you like it, if you think its nice, you think its great, wonderful. However no one "deserves" to win a game of chance any more than anyone else.

Somehow I don't think condescension makes you look intelligent instead of a jackass.

I don't care where the money comes from, game of chance, f*cking bag of money out of the sky, the guy who works harder deserves money more than the guy who doesn't. Period.

Don't like condescending, cool. Straight up, your unwavering support for greedy people makes you look like a jackass.

In my opinion, of course.

You know, Tyyr, just for the record, this comment:

Wasn't meant to imply that you're unintelligent; I was saying that stating it like that wasn't going to change your mind on this subject.

Sorry if I phrased it poorly.

I feel good for this guy, because unlike the rich people that win the lottery, he said he was going to share it or something to that effect somewhere in there, that's very kind of him, and I think that it will do him well.
