Most of our modern ships don't carry more than one gun either; the job of anti-air and ship-to-ship are covered by various missiles and CIWS.Deepcrush wrote:No missles, no anti-aircraft weapons? Just sad....

That's because she was designed for light policing duties. Not everything requires a ship with a billion dollars worth of weaponary.

It does carry two Exocets. Those things are pretty serious anti-ship weapons, and that cannon is fairly powerful with a high ROF (78rpm).

Re: Shocking News - French Victorious in Combat
Well, if they approached from behind then the cannon wouldn't be noticeable. If it were nighttime, that would also have helped to screw up any chances of recognising the ship for what it was.Cann me over-careful, but I think I might look at this ship and just possibly notice the cannon...

True enough.

US Navy uses deceptive lighting to simulate differnt ship types such as tankers, cruise ships, fishing boats ect........ If they were doing something similar and it was dark you might mistake that class of ship for a civie (such as a fishing boat).

Re: Shocking News - French Victorious in Combat
Except it just so happened that that fishing boat had trained Marines (or French equivilant) with weapons and tactics. Yeah, I think it was slightly unfair to the pirates, but who cares, they don't really deserve fair.

Call me a bastard, but I think their first mistake was bothering to take prisoners. A few rounds from the deck gun then let nature sort out the rest.

Deceptive lighting? How would that work? *Legit curious*USS Aeon wrote:US Navy uses deceptive lighting to simulate differnt ship types such as tankers, cruise ships, fishing boats ect........ Agreed.Tyyr wrote:Call me a b*****d, but I think their first mistake was bothering to take prisoners. A few rounds from the deck gun then let nature sort out the rest.
I imagine, putting rows of lights at various heights, or extinguishing others to mimic the lighting profile of certain known ship types.RK_Striker_JK_5 wrote:Deceptive lighting? At a distance, the only thing you'll see of a ship is its lights during night time. Setting lights at certain points can give your ship the impression of having a different shape than it really does.

Re: Shocking News - French Victorious in Combat
Actually she was designed to be a very light, small, cheap ship with minimal crew and capability. Low cost to operate, but therefore perfect for this kind of mission.
The gun is a 100 mm cannon. As well as that she carries two 20 mm cannon, plus the two Exocets mentioned before. She also has a helicopter; not sure if that's armed or not, but you have to imagine it can at least have a couple of GPMGs mounted on the doors. You'd be mad to take on a real Frigate or Destroyer in her, but that's really not what she's designed for.

Thanks, Rochey and Tsuki. That'd make sense.
