Lie tests tried on sex offenders

Post by Graham Kennedy »

Lie tests tried on sex offenders
Sex offenders will be made to take lie detector tests as part of probation conditions when they are freed from prison, the Ministry of Justice says.
Know the dirty little secret about lie detectors? They DON'T WORK!

Seriously. There is absolutely no evidence that lie detectors work, and plenty that they don't. And now a my government wants to use them to decide if people are committing crimes. And nobody is going to complain much about this, because the target group are sex offenders, and nobody cares about those. :madashell:

Polygraphs don't work, there are so many ways to beat them its not funny.

I've been hooked up to one when I was like 16, my mates dad had brought an old one for the hell of it. There are two ways of really messing with it, either really controlling your breathing with slow deep breaths, so sending your body into a constant level of excitment/fear so it cant tell if your lying.

But I was reading the other day they are trying new FMRI scans that seem to be almost fool proof lie detectors... shame they cost a few million dollars.

Still it would be good to throw someone who has been sentenced to death into one just to make sure.

For those who don't know, the basics of a lie detector are that they measure things like heart rate, blood pressure, muscle state, etc. The idea is that elevations in these measure how stressed you are, and that you are more stressed when lying than when telling the truth. The questions you are asked include a series of control questions which it is assumed you will answer truthfully (and, so I've heard control questions that it is assumed you will lie to), so they can compare the stress levels of truth and lies.

There is some truth to the former - stress does cause these things. But so do other things. The latter assumption is, at best, true for only some people.

There are many ways to mess with lie detectors. For instance you put a stone in your shoe and press down on it at the appropriate times, making true answers seem false because your body responds as if to stress. An investigator can often tell if you do that, though.

Alternatively you can stress yourself by screaming in your head "they're going to get me!" during control questions. Undetectable.

If you repeat a lie frequently enough you can get used to it, and saying it doesn't stress you nearly as much any more. Especially if you think calm, soothing thoughts when you're asked it.

Or, you may just be such a sociopathic ass that you can simply lie about stuff and not be the least bit stressed by it.

Or, you may be so nervous about the test that you are stressed for all questions and fail it anyway.

Sadly I know people that can pass a lie detector test no problem because they are sociopathic asses, and these are 18 yr olds... scary.

Lie detectors work by checking physical states, such as heart rate, persperation, etc, Supposedly if you're lying, you place stress on your body, causing these factors to vary. That's how they claim to determine whether or not you're lying.

Of course, as anyone can see, that's an incredibly poor way of testing anyone for anything. Simply being interrogated can place a lot of stress on your mind, which could easily give off false conclusions. Similarly, simply training yourself to relax and be calm will also fuck it up.

IIRC, Mythbusters did some tests on a polygraph once, and found a bunch of ways to beat it.

Anyone watch the QI where they talked about this? Supposedly the easiest way to tell is that your anal muscles contract when you lie. Pleasant.

I had to take one, one time back in my drug days. I answered every question honestly, and because of what I was on, they said I needed a psychologist, because I'd even lied about my name

Drugs either raise or lower all those telltale signs, and they are quite easy to get.

I know of this great lie detector: it's called evidence that proves you're guilty when you say you're not!

"Did you do it?"

"No"

"No, really, did you?"

"Really, no."

"OK, you can go"

Lie detectors are really useless.

I did one once. Every response came up the same. For the two initial questions, there was no decernable difference between my lie and my truth. This is a common problem for people who have Aspergers.

It works the other way, for those of us without any flattening of affect. Nervousness (or even natural heavy perspiration or other somatic effects - like those of a hypoglycemic reaction) can create all sorts of false positives.

I took one a few years ago...just to mess with the tester (since it was for fun) I lied during the control "truth" questions, and then swiched off btw lying and telling the truth every other question...it only caught one lie, and that was the control question for my name
