Re: Which ship could become the backbone of the Modern Starfleet
I wonder what would happen if DITL made a series of Starships. That could be interesting to do, I'd be happy to do it as well.

90% of them would probably turn out as combat vessels.Reliant121 wrote:I wonder what would happen if DITL made a series of Starships. That could be interesting to do, I'd be happy to do it as well.

And they'd all be stuffed to the gills with guns and torpedoes.

We're not that bad. We're not stupid enough to put 5 QT launchers on a hospital ship for example.

When exactly did I insult him????Deepcrush wrote:What was the purpose of this? You're insulting someone for the use of Type-XII phasers? Really, if thats the best you have then you just shouldn't bother.
The first Paladin draft I saw had Type-XIV Phasers, and all the rest of the goodies mentioned.
Then Tsuki mentioned that the original draft (his draft) didn't have the Type-XIV, only the Type-XII.
To me, this did not diminish the... shall we say, uber powerful natureness of the ship?
What exactly did I write that was insulting?
I'm really curious...
Based exactly on what was mentioned in the novels where those ships come from. Both Vesta and Luna have stats supplied by a Wiki site.
These two ships are part of the "EU" of ST Novels, written by authors that had the approval of Paramount.
They may not be canon, but they still have a stamp of approval from the higher ups...
Well, modern as in "stuff that we saw in the movies", or modern as in "everything that happens after the DW in the movies, shows and novels"?Also recall that the title of this thread is MODERN and not FUTURE STUFF THAT MAY HAPPEN.
The first link I was given had the non-canon Type-XIV Phasers (unless they were mentioned in a show and I didn't know about it. Were they?).Lt. Staplic wrote:All tech used on the ship is canon (AFAIK), we didn't make up any new tech to uber up our ship, or to make it unstoppable,
The ship is basically the Defiant, only made bigger so more of the canon tech could be crammed on it, putting a lot more ablative armor on then any other ship as well.
It's basically a beefed-up Defiant, nothing more, nothing less, from what I've seen.
I've always felt the Defiant was already at the limit of canon and wankdom, so this ship kinda pushes right by that limit IMO.
But hey, you have every right to feel it's not wanky, but I've got all the rights to think it is...
Sorry if this insults some of you, I'll simply refer to it as the Uber Paladin from now on...

Compared to what?Rochey wrote:The problem is that standard Trek ships are ridiculously underpowered and underarmed for their size.
They might not be as powerful as you'd like them to be, but they seem to do the job just fine.
Fed ships are usually more powerful then the equivalent of most other races, pound for pound.
They don't need more powerful ships.
If you want a real combat platform, you already have the Sovie.
Simply replace most of it's holodecks fore more power generators, redundant shield projectors, and you'll have a tough ship that can take a pounding and stay in the battle...
Anyway, as I said, it's just my opinion, you don't need to agree with me...

Compared to what they could be. Sure, they're adequate for their role. But as any military leader will tell you, "adequate" is not what you aim for.Compared to what?

Of course not, everyone knows you aim for the center mass...Rochey wrote:"adequate" is not what you aim for.

Really kid? You're going to poke at someone's work and then pretend otherwise. Pussy...When exactly did I insult him????

Wrong, they have the approval of Paramont to write the books. If the words being written were of direct approval of Trek then it would be canon. Its not so that should tell you something.Based exactly on what was mentioned in the novels where those ships come from.

Ships based off of a non canon source by people who know little to nothing of what they write then transfered to a Wiki site. Not usable for our needs.
God you're retarded. MODERN as in Canon. Movies and TV shows are canon. Novels are not.Well, modern as in "stuff that we saw in the movies", or modern as in "everything that happens after the DW in the movies, shows and novels"?
At no point did the official Paladin have Type XIV phasers. The Type XIIs are the highest phaser in service for starships. The first link I was given had the non-canon Type-XIV Phasers (unless they were mentioned in a show and I didn't know about it. Were they?).
The ship is basically the Defiant, only made bigger so more of the canon tech could be crammed on it, putting a lot more ablative armor on then any other ship as well.
Thats the point. The Paladin is a warship, a bigger one then the Defiant. Makes sense it would have more fire power and protection. It's basically a beefed-up Defiant, nothing more, nothing less, from what I've seen.
In other words you are insulting something. Not because it makes sense or not but because like most things in this world its beyond your understanding. Good to know. To say you think it's wanky implys you think. That's more credit then you have to give.I've always felt the Defiant was already at the limit of canon and wankdom, so this ship kinda pushes right by that limit IMO.
But hey, you have every right to feel it's not wanky, but I've got all the rights to think it is...

If you can spare a cell, figure this. How is it that you call a ship a REAL combat platform if you have to spend all of that effort to turn it into a combat platform? Do you even pretend to think before you speak?Compared to what?
They might not be as powerful as you'd like them to be, but they seem to do the job just fine.

Re: Which ship could become the backbone of the Modern Starfleet
yes, it's a scalled up Defiant, however as stated above, it was designed like the Defiant to be a warship, even more-so infact than the Defiant, why would we not make it's defences and weapons as strong as we could within reason, which is exactly what we did.Lt. Staplic wrote:2. For every decision that was made about the ship, the pro's and cons were weighed, you cited Ablative Armor and QT Launchers. The ship was designed as a battle ship, so it is obviously going to have a lot of armor and if any ship would get the QT's a Battle ship would...but you also have to notice that for all that armor the ship took a big hit to the number produced, the speed and maneuverability of the ship in combat. For the QT's we lost internal space that could have been used for other weapons or holodecks. An uber ship wouldn't have these drawbacks, it was a carfully thought out project that makes sence with the era it was designed in and the purpose of it's design
If we wanted a Wank ship, the thing would have had 5 Phase lances, there would have been a pulse cannon every 2 meters and the shields would have been borg, Dominion, Romulan, and Klingon resistant, able to absorb 10,000,000 ZettaJules of damage before failing.
