I thought the courtesy sniff was what you do if someone comes into a public restroom while you're on the John. Sort of a "Hello, you're not alone" sort of thing.

Ahhh, that would make sense, maybe even a courtesy throat clearing cough as well.

in public toilets, i tend to hum loudly out of sympathy and embarrassment if in an adjacent cubicle to a 'moaner', helps veil the noise although sometimes people associate me with the wrong noise........

Are you right handed? And Rochey, are you left handed?
I'm also right handed.

Hm, that gives me an idea for a pointless thread!

Just for a bit of a laugh sometimes, if I'm in the old khazi 'spending a penny' (i.e. 'doing a number 1' and I don't mean Will Riker....) and when I'm finished and have washed my hands etc, if there is someone in a cubicle really giving it some with plenty of splashdown....if no-one else is about, I'll simply loudly knock on the cubicle door and wait for the sheepish 'hello?' before leaving :)

...preferable to my old technique of waiting by the toilet inner entrance, hurling into the cubicle some toilet roll like a pseudo-grenade then pelting away, i was a little imp when younger

I used to scream while I was pissing at the urinal that "the bitch gave me the burn!", if there was a guy in the stall. Now I usually don't use public washrooms, seems people have problems with not shitting on the seat around here.
