That's... not terribly comforting.

I know, that kinda made me think wtf.

I can understand it surface ships. I mean, dad was sitting on the bow of the Juno when she had intimate contact with a freighter. That i can understand. but subs?

I blame french driving. Come on, especially if one lived in Paris near L'arc de Triomphe.

I think by "bump" he might have meant hitting terrain, rather than other ships. After all, don't subs normally run with their sonars (or whatever they use) off? That might make it difficult for them to see obstructions in their paths.

Nope, he specifically meant that they hit. Normally at stealthily low speeds, so it does little damage.

That they hit other subs? Bizzare. Does he mean other RN subs, or subs from other nations?

I'm not sure, I doubt that it meant other RN subs. The RN tends to deploy them relatively widespread. Gotta remember that there are only 12 in the fleet, of all sizes.

Attention DITL forumites! I am now about to post the obligatory French military joke :

"I wonder if the French sub surrendered after the bump?"

Thank you. We now return you to your normal business.

The vast majority of the time it would be US and British SSNs hitting Russian SSBNs - it's the inevitable combination of someone tailgating too closely and a Crazy Ivan

Aye. I don't think the USN has ever released details on numbers of cold war collisions, but there is no doubt the happened. Isn't that one of the theories for the USS Scorpion?

I thought Scorpion went under when her one of her ballast or diving systems malfunctioned and she just kept going down on a test. Or at least, thats what i saw on some documentary ages ago.

Ah, that rings bells. I stand corrected. Why does a nation have so many bloody subs ¬.¬

Because obviously, if we had fewer subs the Commies would win. Or as it is now, the Terrorists would win. ;-)
