Am I the only person who does this?

Post by thelordharry »

Ever perform an action or routine that you believe is a bit 'odd' and think to yourself, "I wonder if I'm the only person who does this?" (even though someone, somewhere probably does too).

Here's my one. I use my mobile/cell phone (call it what you will) as a prop to get me out of awkward situations I'd rather avoid. Take today for instance. There was an army of clipboard women standing outside the local supermarket, pouncing on people asking them if they had a spare '5 minutes' to answer some questions. I get embarrased to say 'no' but really didn't want to lose 5 minutes of my life answering inane questions about, I don't know, the quality of peanuts they had in store, so as I approached, I took my phone out of my pocket and had a pretend conversation with someone and sailed right through them without any trouble. It works on so many levels. Vagrants at bus stops leave you alone if you're on the phone, when you're passing colleagues in the corridor or street that you know you'd otherwise have to strike up a conversation with, they see you're on the phone and leave you alone etc etc. It really works a treat. Even at work with the desk-phone, I have seen someone approaching my department with that "right..who shall I pick on to ask this question?" look in there eyes and then pick up the handset and pretend to be talking to someone so they go bother someone else.

Let's hear about your idiosyncrasies! :) (legal ones only please!)

Hooray! I'm not a freak. Well, I am but you know what I mean.

I do that with my wireless earpiece. Nobody can tell, and I don't even have to get my phone out. I see somebody with whom I don't want to speak, and I just start talking. If the offending party still tries to pursue the issue, I just shake my head and point at the earpiece.

I also fake a bad connection if I want to get out of an actual phone conversation.

Mine border on OCD I think. My closet can make me nuts. I have both Jaguar and Land Rover uniform shirts in varying styles and colors. If I don't wear the right shirt on the day I've designated for it, and the matching pants, it throws my whole day off.

I do the whole phone thing all the time, oh and never walk about with a smile on your face - a happy employee hasn't got enough work to be worried about.

The shirts thing mark, I'm afraid I'll have to leave that end of things for you to worry about.

When I worked at Domino's, everyone but the managers wore blue uniform shirts; I found one of the old red ones in my size, and it was the only one I'd wear from then on.

I wasn't a manager, but I was a damn sight more productive than any of the other CSRs or drivers, so I figured I should seperate uniform.

Customer Service Representative. I answered the phones, worked the oven, boxed the pizzas, took inventory, etc.

Of, course, I was really only supposed to answer the phones.
