QFT.

"Palin discusses potential plans for America" http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/10/21/ ... index.html
I saw this headline on cnn.com, and I suddenly had this inexplicable urge to jump out a window. Wouldn't it be cool if you could just jump out of the US like a burning building and land in Mexico or Canada?

I love the part where she says that socialistic policies aren't good for the economy.
And where has capitalism gotten us?

Well, not to be a smartass, but it got us a strong economy and years of prosperity. Capitalism without oversight is what got us into this mess, but capitalism in general is not a bad thing.

I will quote (or at least semi-quote) my great uncle Karl...
Capitalism will fail.
While I do not remember his exact words, he said that a purely capitalist economy cannot last.
And what do you know, our economy is actually faltering from capitalism. The bailout of the financial institutions (using taxpayer money, which means the taxpayer owns the banks (economically, not legally)) has made our economy border on COMMUNISM!

And yes, I am referring to Karl Marx, if you were wondering.

We don't have a pure capitalist society, but I understand your point. We have moved closer, but we're not bordering on communism by a longshot. We still are very much a capitalist nation. I mean, if you look at the spectrum of possible economies, pure capitalism and communism are diametrically opposed, so we'd have to pretty much travel across the entire spectrum to border on communism.

Its gotten you the most powerful nation in human history that almost every other nation on Earth tries to copy.

It has gotten you in a position of power that even after this massive economic blow up has you still being untouchable on any level by any other nation on Earth.

So... yeah. Its gotten you a shit load.

Definitely, Teaos.

I think there are lots of Americans, myself included who don't feel comfortable in this situation. Being citizens of a Romanesque superpower, what does that say about us as individuals?

The US has NEVER had, or intended to have, a true, absolute, laissez-faire capitalism. What was funny about Palin's comment was not her support of our (modified) capitalism, but the fact that the only thing that kept us from 1929 a few weeks back was a socialistic intervention, and continued socialistic policy.

our economy's good because we have a socialist frame/fallback security, to structure the capitalistic beast that breeds supiriority.
In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

That combined with it coming out that Palin used tax money to fly her kids around is one hell of an October surprise. And the democrats were worried about Obama's.

Not a huge deal, no. Wasting tax dollars, yes. Last night, McCain was on about how fiscally responsible she is... Right...
