Re: Movies where you cheered for the villains
The 60's Italian movie El Alamein, where outnumbered, heroic, noble Italians battle against the ruthless armoured hordes of the evil fascist British. I was firmly behind the villains as they thunder over the dunes in another wave of M113 APC's to break against the unyielding Italian defences. Also, ...

Re: I'm on IMDB finally
They used Bacon partly because he doesn't have as much of a set persona as some stars and therefore turns with in more diverse set of films with a more diverse set of co-stars, but mainly because he was pretty hip at the time the hipsters who thought up the game came up with it. It works with plenty...

Mars Mission, Moon bases and perhaps more importantly, fusion reactors. At least it seems hydrogen engines for cars are very close.
On a less era defining scale, I'd like to see the undisputable discovery of Earhart (and Noonan's) body and/or her plane, and the release of Duke Nukem Forever.

Looks like things could get interesting this year. Who would have thought that Button, the man who used to be Lewis Hamilton, would rise from the dead so dramaticaly?

Re: What to do with my ancient Compaq Presario 5000?
I am still using my first 1997 PC. However, with regular upgrades/replacement parts it's the old story of the hammer with two new heads and six new handles - the only original parts been the keyboard and mouse mat. I've got a Commodore Amiga and a 1984 Sharp MZ 700 in the attic I can't bring myself ...

Re: The big question for ST:XI
There is a conversation in J J Abrams Lost series where the character Hurley explains the concept of the Red Shirt to Sawyer. It's a little bit meta as there had been a lot of comparisons made between the "background survivors" and Red Shirts on the web. Hurley's dialogue often echoes the ...

Re: Rene Auberjonois in Short Circuit 2?
I saw R A in a mediocre 1970's Supernatural/serial killer movie "The Eyes Of Laura Mars" a few months back. He was a major character, so it seems unlikly he was doing extra work in the 80's. It also featured a young, pre-grizzled Tommy Lee Jones as the Romantic Lead, and a murder victim po...

Re: "Great" movies you can't stand
To name a few: Dances With Wolves. (The most over-rated, boring film ever?) The Talented Mr Ripley. Interview With The Vampire. Schlinders List. Casino. Gosford Park. A few people mentioned The Departed, which I saw for the first time last night, and while it was fairly good, I genuinely thought the...

Re: Tennant is leaving
Hm, I was wrong - Matt Smith is the new Doctor . Not someone I'm familiar with. His CV includes a few things I've seen, but I can't place him. The (rather indistinct) picture shows a very thin, very pale bloke - dare I say an Emo or even Goth Who? EDIT: Linky - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainme...

Re: Tennant is leaving
They are announcing the new Doctor Who actor tomorrow. (Jan 3rd) I'd like to see Richard E Grant, but he doesn't seem to be on any of the short lists I've seen. I've got a feeling Paterson Joseph from Survivors will get the TARDIS. The BBC drama department seem to be casting from a very small pool o...

Re: God help us all, he's done it again.
I don't know if this is true or not, but I read somewhere that Dennis Pennis, (a vile celebrity reporter charactor of the comedian Paul Kaye, kind of a precursur of Borat) stuck a microphone under Steve Martin's nose on a film premier red carpet about ten years back, and asked "why aren't you f...

Re: System Shock 2
I bought SS2 on the day of release. (And Deus Ex, for that matter, guess what style of games I like?) As to pirating it, it isn't really much of a crime, IMO, as it's long out of print, and legit copies are becoming collectors items: The game was a huge critical hit, was highly influential, but sold...
